#1 in M&A
Stikeman Elliott was ranked #1 by value of completed Canadian deals in Thomson Reuters' M&A Legal Advisory Review for Q4 and the #1 Canadian firm by volume of North American deals in Corpfin's year-end M&A league tables.

"Go-to law firm" in Securities
For the fourth year in a row, Stikeman Elliott is #1 by value of Canadian equity offerings as counsel to underwriters and issuers and underwriters combined, according to Bloomberg's 2008 league tables, acting on 35% of all securities offerings. The firm earned top rankings in a number of other key categories.

India Award for Tata acquisition
Tata Motors' acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover, on which Stikeman Elliott acted as local counsel for Tata, won in the Mergers & Acquisitions category of AsiaLaw's first ever India Awards.

Client identification requirements
The provincial law societies have imposed new client identification and verification requirements on lawyers, in order to address concerns regarding proceeds of crime and terrorist financing. These new requirements will apply to new matters in which a lawyer is retained after December 31, 2008, regardless of whether the client is a new or existing client. Stikeman Elliott is acting for Sinopec International Petroleum Exploration and Production Corporation in their $2.1 billion offer to acquire all outstanding common shares of Tanganyika Oil Company Ltd.

London lawyer receives award

Pay equity ruling reversed
The firm acted for the Quebec Employers' Council in successfully arguing a pay equity matter before the Quebec Superior Court, reversing a decision of the Commission des relations du travail.

The firm acted for Dubai-based Istithmar World Capital and Nakheel in their acquisition of a 20 per cent interest in Cirque du Soleil.

Stikeman Elliott is acting for Teck Cominco Ltd. in its $14.1 billion acquisition of Fording Canadian Coal Trust.

SCC leave denied in drug testing case
The Supreme Court of Canada has declined to hear a case involving the right to test workers in safety-sensitive jobs for drugs. Barbara Johnston represented the successful intervenors in the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Symcor and SunTrust sign outsourcing contract
Stikeman Elliott acted for Symcor Inc. in its multi-year outsourcing agreement for a significant portion of SunTrust's back-office banking operations including their check clearing, lockbox processing and statement production.

The firm acted for Metallica Resources Inc. in its US$1.6 billion merger with Peak Gold Ltd. and New Gold Inc.

Agreement between Alcoa and the Government of Quebec
Stikeman Elliott represented Alcoa Inc. in connection with an agreement with the Government of Quebec relating to Alcoa's development in Quebec, including a $1.2 billion investment for the modernization of its Baie-Comeau plant and power supply arrangements. The historic agreement will oversee Alcoa's development in Québec until at least 2040.

#1 in Mining sector corporate finance for 2007
Stikeman Elliott was ranked #1 by the Financial Post as legal advisers on equity offerings in the Mining sector in 2007. The firm was first by deal value in acting for underwriters (over $2.2 billion) and in acting for issuers and underwriters combined (over $2.97 billion), including acting on the year's top deal, the $1.2 billion IPO by Franco-Nevada Corp. , and 5 of the top 10 largest deals of the year.  Partner Jay Kellerman was quoted in the accompanying Financial Post feature on the mining sector.

Stikeman Elliott has been nominated in 3 categories for the International Financial Law Review's Americas Deals of the Year: the M&A Deal of the Year for work on the Thomson-Reuters merger, the Private Equity Deal of the Year for work on the Harbinger-Calpine deal and the Project Finance Deal of the Year for work on the St. Clair Power deal.

Stikeman Elliott's Tax Group has prepared a commentary on the tax implications of the 2008 Budget.

Largest IPO in U.S. history
Stikeman Elliott acted as Canadian counsel to the underwriters on the US$19.1 billion offering by Visa Inc., the largest in U.S. history.

Lawyers honoured
Richard W. Pound was recently awarded the Laureus "Spirit of Sport" Prize for his work as head of the World Anti-Doping Agency, while David Gillanders received the Simon Fraser University Chancellor's Distinguished Service Award.

Alstom successful in claim
The firm obtained a favorable judgment for Alstom before Québec Superior Court, which ruled a call for tenders must be issued for the $1.2 billion contract for the replacement of Montréal Métro cars.
