What are you looking for in the students you hire?
We are looking for bright, engaged, self-motivated people who show a real interest in our practice, together with good team skills, judgment, strong ethics and leadership skills. We look for people who enjoy challenges and teamwork, work hard, enjoy a variety of interests and will add to the texture of our firm.

What distinguishes your firm from other firms?
We are a young firm both in age and in spirit. We have mandates of the highest quality. We are entrepreneurial and give our students and associates opportunities to work with stimulating colleagues in a team environment on national and international files. We encourage our students and associates to take on lots of responsibility early in their career, with the firm supplying top-notch support with a minimum of hierarchy and structure.

How many articling students do you hire?
Generally, the Ottawa office hires three to four articling students each year.

How many summer students do you hire?
We generally hire between one and three summer students each year in the Ottawa office.

What salary and benefits do you provide to students?
Our current articling student salary is $48,000 per year (pro-rated for the 10-month period) plus related employment benefits such as an extended health care and dental plan. In addition, the firm will pay tuition fees up to a maximum of $4,000 to third year law students who commit to complete their articles with us. The Firm will also pay tuition and the articling student salary for all students during the skills and professional responsibility program and during study periods for the licensing examinations of the Bar Admission Course, regardless of hireback decisions. Articling students are paid for two weeks of vacation in accordance with the Law Society's guidelines; summer students for one week. Articling students also receive a subsidy for a fitness membership, including the initiation fee and 50% of the monthly fitness membership fee, to a maximum of $500. Summer students are provided with this benefit pro-rated for their term.

What sort of continuing legal education programs do you have for students?
The Ottawa office offers orientation seminars for students, as well as seminars conducted by external organizations we invite to the firm.  Students are welcome and encouraged to attend practice group meetings and lunches, and to attend external CLE programs of interest.

What is your Maternity Policy?
Associates may take leave up to the maximum period permitted by law. Stikeman Elliott will provide a 17-week salary supplement to the Employment Insurance maternity benefits to "top up" to 95% of an associate's regular salary, provided she has completed at least one year of practice with the firm. Requests for additional leave, paternity leave and alternate work arrangements are considered on a case-by-case basis. One of our Ottawa partners recently took a four month paternity leave.
