Questions about Applying and Interviewing for Student Positions
What do I need to include as part of my application? Should I send my application by e-mail, fax or mail? Your application package should include your cover letter, resume, list of courses that you are currently taking or will be taking in the upcoming terms and photocopies of official academic transcripts from all post secondary institutions attended. We are also happy to receive reference letters. We do not require writing samples. Please feel free to send your application by mail, email or fax. Please refrain from sending duplicate copies.
Please include an email address where you can be reached as we often communicate with candidates by email - especially during the articling student and summer student recruitment process.
For students who are applying for articling or summer student positions, please also include the telephone number at which you can be reached in Calgary during interview week in the event we need to reach you.
Our summer program is available to both first and second year law students. The deadline for applications for our summer program is the earlier of the on-campus interview deadline for your school or, for law schools without such a process, September 9, 2008.
The deadline for receipt of articling applications is Friday, May 15, 2009.
When will I hear from you once I've submitted an application? Once we receive your application, we will send you an acknowledgement of your application either by email or letter. For articling student candidates, we will be in touch with you prior to the Match Week to set up an interview time.
Can I contact students or lawyers at the firm in advance of my interview to ask questions that I have? We encourage you to contact our current students listed on our website to discuss with them their experience at Stikeman Elliott. Please also feel free to contact the members of the Student Committee or other lawyers at the firm.
How should I go about arranging my schedule during interview week for articling positions? We suggest that you schedule your interviews in two-hour timeslots so that you leave ample time to meet with our lawyers during your interview. We want to afford you plenty of time to meet with our lawyers and obtain a sense of what articling and, looking ahead, practicing at Stikeman Elliott would be like. We anticipate that you will be better able to do that if you are not racing to reach another interview.
We will conduct interviews as dictated by the Matching Program for Articling Students in Alberta.
When are offers communicated by Stikeman Elliott for articling positions? Stikeman Elliott strictly follows the recruitment guidelines as set by the Matching Program for Articling Students in Alberta and, as such, we will not communicate that we are making an offer to you prior to the date and time prescribed.
