Frequently Asked Questions

Questions and Answers
Here are a few frequently asked questions to which we have tried to answer. Do not hesitate to contact Michèle Denis, Director - Student Programs, at (514) 397-3073 if there is anything else you'd like to know.

What are your main areas of practice as a firm?
Our lawyers are renowned experts in their respective fields of practice. They work in broadly defined practice groups, coming together in different multi-disciplinary teams on virtually every project.

We sometimes hear from students that, because we are a top Canadian business law firm, we must practice predominantly corporate law. It is true that we have a first class corporate/securities practice. But to serve the diverse needs of the increasingly complex business and financial communities, we have a top-flight litigation practice and expertise in a broad range of other practice areas including litigation, tax, competition, real estate, environmental, employment and labour law, and information technology and intellectual property. Whether you're interested in corporate law or in areas other than corporate law or whether you're still undecided about what you want to do, we encourage you to read more about our practice areas and about what we can offer.

How many lawyers work at Stikeman Elliott?
Our Montréal office totals approximately 150 lawyers. Overall, more than 400 lawyers staff our Montréal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, New York, London and Sydney offices.

How many stage interviews does the Montréal office hold?
Each year, we meet approximately 100 candidates for a first interview; almost half of them will be called for a second interview.

How many stagiaires do you hire?
During the last few years, we have recruited between 10 and 15 stagiaires each year.

How is the physical layout at the office for students and stagiaires?
The summer students are grouped in teams of three or four in large workrooms usually located on the same floor as the practice group to which they are assigned during the summer. Each student has a modular workstation, a telephone, voice-mail and a computer. Stagiaires work in groups of two in each office and also have a telephone, a voice-mail and a computer. All students and stagiaires have access to a laptop computer when necessary and all online tools are at their disposal from their workstation.
