Credit Union transaction completed The firm acted for Credit Union Central of British Columbia in its acquisition of the assets of Credit Union Central of Ontario Limited. The combined entity, with assets of approximately $8 billion, is now known as Central 1 Credit Union.

ABCP Restructuring Stikeman Elliott is acting for a group of seven foreign bank asset providers in the $32 billion third party asset-backed commercial paper CCAA restructuring, the largest restructuring in Canadian history. Agreement between Alcoa and the Government of Quebec Stikeman Elliott represented Alcoa Inc. in connection with an agreement with the Government of Quebec relating to Alcoa's development in Quebec, including a $1.2 billion investment for the modernization of its Baie-Comeau plant and power supply arrangements. The historic agreement will oversee Alcoa's development in Québec until at least 2040.

Antonio Lamer (1933 - 2007) Stikeman Elliott is saddened over the passing of former chief justice Antonio Lamer, one of the longest-serving and most influential judges in Canadian history. After his retirement from the Supreme Court of Canada in 2000, Mr. Lamer acted as counsel in the firm's Ottawa office, and as a friend and mentor to many of our lawyers.

Supreme Court rulings a big win for IBC
On Friday, October 19, 2007, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned two Court of Appeal decisions which interpreted the standard indemnity language found in various insurance statutes throughout Canada. The Court narrowed the scope and meaning of the indemnity language found in most Canadian automobile insurance policies. Alan D'Silva, along with Danielle Royal and Ellen Snow, represented the intervener, Insurance Bureau of Canada and the interests of insurers in Canada.
