François Gilbert
Law Practice
François Gilbert is Counsel in the Banking group of the Montréal office of Stikeman Elliott. Mr. Gilbert has 20 years' experience as a banking and finance lawyer, with expertise covering a broad range of sectors including structured finance, project finance, syndicated lending, securitization, derivatives and debt capital markets.

Before joining the firm, Mr. Gilbert was Vice-President, Legal Affairs, Derivatives at the Bourse de Montréal, Canada's national derivatives exchange, where he was responsible for all legal and regulatory matters pertaining to the exchange and its clearing house, the Canadian Derivatives Clearing Corporation. While at the Bourse, Mr. Gilbert acted as lead counsel in structuring and implementing CDCC's repo clearing platform for the Canadian fixed income market.

Prior to returning to Montréal, Mr. Gilbert practiced for several years in London at a leading finance law firm where he represented international banks and investment funds on a wide range of structured finance transactions. While in London, he developed significant expertise pertaining to public structured note offerings across Europe, and cash and synthetic transactions based on novel asset classes, such as project finance, trade finance, leveraged loans and emerging market debt.

Until 2005, Mr. Gilbert was a banking partner in a leading Canadian firm in Toronto, where he specialized in structured finance, securitization and secured lending. He was also head of the derivatives practice and a member of the opinions committee.

  • The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory 2016, as a leading practitioner in the derivative instruments and asset securization sectors.

Professional Activities
Mr. Gilbert is a member of the Quebec bar, a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and a Solicitor in England and Wales. He is also a member of the Montréal office's Knowledge Management & Legal Innovation Committee.
