Trent J. Mercier
Law Practice
Trent Mercier specializes in energy law with a focus on international and domestic oil and gas exploration, production and development projects. He has over a decade of experience advising operators, non-operators, oilfield equipment and service providers, and portfolio management groups in regard to onshore and offshore projects in over 20 countries in Africa, Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and South America.

Trent has led the negotiation of multiple production sharing contracts, joint venture and strategic partnership arrangements, asset and share acquisitions and mergers, and field supply agreements. He has advised numerous companies on strategy and execution for the re-negotiation of host government petroleum contracts, fiscal stabilisation, cost recovery disputes, off-taking access rights and expropriation.

Throughout his career, Trent has worked extensively with management teams in the establishment, growth and sale of oilfield supply companies. He has assisted a number of oilfield supply companies with expansion into international markets, with a particular focus on the Middle East.

Supplementing his extensive legal expertise, Trent has an education in geology and hands-on oil and gas field experience. He has worked with Alberta Energy, the ministry responsible for the development of Alberta's energy resources, and the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). These experiences provide him with unique insight into the issues arising in oil and gas operations and practical skills to address such issues.

Trent is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Association of International Petroleum Negotiators and Petroleum Joint Venture Association.

Prior to joining Stikeman Elliott, Trent was a partner and Co-Global Head of Oilfield Services at a major global law firm.
