We work with our associates to advance their careers by building substantive legal, client service, business development, and leadership skills at every level, all the way through to partnership. Your goals will drive the growth of your practice and the development of your skills and expertise.

A development program that goes beyond traditional CLE training

We take a bespoke approach to training and career development. Stikeman Elliott’s E-Curve program is a carefully calibrated lawyer development program that builds skills sequentially. In addition to a formal program of skills development and practice support sessions, you can also choose from an extensive menu of additional learning opportunities. Each element of the program is designed to offer the tools and understanding needed to move to the next stage, secure in the knowledge that you have the skills to succeed.

Our broad and comprehensive formal CLE program is delivered in a variety of formats. In-house seminars are taught by subject-matter experts, including Stikeman Elliott partners and select guest speakers. Regular practice group meetings as well as off-site skills training and development programs are also an important part of the process.

Mentorship is for everyone

The Stikeman Elliott emphasis on coaching and mentorship not only supports your career development, it ensures that new hires are fully integrated into the fabric of the firm. Your mentors will work closely with you, helping you navigate your career and acting as a sounding board on a range of matters. In addition to these formal mentor relationships, any of your other colleagues will be happy to offer the benefit of their perspective on an informal basis.

Associates also contribute to the development of future generations of Stikeman Elliott colleagues by acting, in turn, as mentors to our junior associates and students.

Feedback is integral to your ongoing development

We believe that giving personalized ongoing feedback regarding skill development and having an ongoing dialogue about your evolving practice and goals is instrumental to your career development. You will meet with your partner mentor for in-depth performance reviews twice a year. Performance reviews are followed by one-on-one career coaching sessions to help turn your practice goals into concrete action plans. And the feedback doesn’t just flow in one direction – we solicit input from our associates and regularly use your suggestions to enhance our work culture and client service best practices.
