A personalized approach to training

Discover what you do best

Our personalized student programs are all about growing your talents. We give you the flexibility to explore so that you can find your passion and make an informed choice about your future area of practice.

Students are free to choose the practice area and the lawyers they wish to work with during the course of their term, whereas our six-month articling student program is structured to offer a choice of two rotations from our four groups: corporate, litigation & dispute resolution, tax, or employment & labour.

Student work assignments are not funneled through a specific mentor or a central workload coordinator. Our summer and articling students are encouraged to seek and accept work from any lawyer in their rotation section, which fosters initiative and relationship building.

Get the most true-to-life experience of legal practice possible

Our belief in the need to continually stretch one’s abilities is so strong that we wrote it into the firm’s core values. As you gain experience, we will expose you to challenges that will build your skills further. Many of our students report that this accelerated approach to training gives them a professional edge.

Stikeman Elliott students work alongside and learn from lawyers in small teams. We want to make sure that you make a meaningful contribution to our work for clients. You will be included in discussions, and your opinion will be heard.

A solid grounding in legal theory and precedent is critical to your success but nothing beats hands-on experience. This is your chance to start doing concrete work. As a student, you will be given real responsibilities for actual client matters.

Experience the benefits of secondments

Enjoy the option of gaining valuable client-side experience through our secondment program. Each summer, we offer our students secondment opportunities to experience the life and reality of in-house practice, gaining a true understanding of the value of superior client service.

Many of our students also benefit from secondments to our foreign offices, such as London and New York, as well as our other Canadian offices, such as Toronto and Calgary. Year after year, students come back with lifelong memories and invaluable learning experiences.

We appreciate who you are

In this environment you will be able to shine among your peers, whatever your strengths may be. We think that diversity leads to stronger and more effective teamwork and we value your special contribution. For example, every summer, students select a recipient from among their peers for the Pierre A. Raymond Award. This honour is awarded to the student or articling student whose profile best exemplifies our firm’s values and who has distinguished themselves by excelling on the sporting, academic, humanitarian, or philanthropic level. The monetary portion of the award is shared between the recipient and a charity of their choice.
