Stikeman Elliott New York firm members help raise over $140,000 for cancer research

October 18, 2019
On October 12, Stikeman Elliott firm members came together to run and raise funds for cancer research at this year’s annual Terry Fox Run (New York). Our New York office Managing Principal Ken Ottenbreit organized the first run 26 years ago, and remains the principal organizer for the event. This year, team Stikeman Elliott raised over $15,000 that will go directly towards supporting the research necessary to achieve Terry Fox’s vision: A world without cancer.

"Growing up in Western Canada, I remember watching Terry during his run and being impressed by his spirit, determination and willingness to help others,” said Ken. “He is a true Canadian hero who showed us the difference that one person can make.” To celebrate Terry Fox’s legacy and raise money for cancer research, Ken decided he would bring the charitable event to New York City. Over the years, Stikeman Elliott members have joined him in making a positive difference through their commitment to community involvement. Since its inception, the Terry Fox Run (New York) has grown from 100 participants to over 3,000 and has raised over $3.5M.

Inspired by his own experience with cancer, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope in 1981, a cross-Canada run, with the goal of raising $1M for cancer research. After 143 days and running two-thirds of the distance, Terry was forced to stop because of his illness, but his legacy continued. Click here to read more about Terry’s story.

We thank everyone who participated in raising funds and awareness for this important cause. For a short video about the event and Ken’s inspiration behind starting this initiative, click here. Stikeman Elliott believes that the passion and creativity of firm members should also serve the communities in which they live and work. This is largely done through local drive and grassroots dedication, as can be seen from multiple initiatives throughout firm offices that focus on community needs. Initiatives such at the Terry Fox Run (New York) reflect that giving back is a part of Stikeman Elliott’s identity and ongoing dedication to community involvement and support.
