Abolition of the Commission on Pay Equity

March 15, 2011

On November 11, 2010, Ms. Michelle Courchesne, Minister responsible for Government Administration and Chair of the Conseil du trésor, introduced Bill 130 thus confirming the government’s intention to abolish the Commission de l'équité salariale.

According to Bill 130, the activities of the Commission on Pay Equity will be transferred to the Commission des normes du travail which shall henceforth be named the Commission des normes du travail et de l’équité salariale. Bill 130, which has yet to be adopted, has generated many reactions, notably within organizations for the protection of women’s rights, which are deploring the announcement and consider the bill as an unacceptable step backwards.
