One of Canada’s pre-eminent Bay Street firms

Stikeman Elliott is a globally recognized leader in Canadian law, and the firm clients call when it counts the most. Members of the Toronto office handle a significant share of the country’s high-profile corporate matters, cross-border transactions and litigation files. Stikeman Elliott is frequently ranked #1 in corporate league tables, and lawyers from our Toronto office are repeatedly praised by leading publications and third-party client surveys.

A forward-thinking approach since the office first opened

The Toronto office launched in 1971 with an audacious choice for lead partner: John Robarts, the well-known former premier of Ontario. This entry into the Toronto market gained immediate notice from other, more established Bay Street firms. The firm grew quickly with the addition of new clients and lawyers – many of whom were attracted to the firm’s entrepreneurial character. By the close of the decade, the firm had 30 lawyers operating out of the landmark Commerce Court building, and Stikeman Elliott was widely recognized as a growing force in the Canadian legal market. Today, the number of lawyers in the Toronto office has increased significantly – all providing innovative solutions and expert counsel to clients on even the most complex issues.

Providing a complete range of business law services

Stikeman Elliott’s Toronto office encompasses a broad-based corporate-commercial law practice with a strong transactional focus. Our clients count on us to offer creative, practical and clear legal advice in areas such as securities, mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, real estate, tax, competition and foreign investment, project development, employment and labour, pensions, technology and regulatory compliance. The office’s highly regarded Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group is particularly known for its class actions, competition and restructuring and insolvency expertise.

International focus

Stikeman Elliott enjoys a well-deserved reputation as the go-to Canadian firm for international business, and our lawyers regularly appear as advisors on high-profile cross-border litigation and multinational transactions. Members of the Toronto office are routinely called to help global corporations and financial institutions navigate Canadian laws and regulations.

Deeply embedded in the local community

Stikeman Elliott firmly believes that individual passion drives collective success, and that we exist to serve our clients and communities.

That’s why every member of the Toronto office is encouraged to volunteer their time and energy to a worthy cause. We are particularly proud of our work with innovative local organizations that help disadvantaged young people expand their career horizons. Many of our lawyers are also active members of the Osgoode Business Clinic, assisting small business owners with their legal needs.
